Prachanda elected Nepal’s new Prime Minister

By Rup Narayan Dhakal–Pokhara: CPN-Maoist Center Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal Prachanda has been elected as Nepal’s new Prime Minister for 2nd time on Wednesday.

363 lawmakers out of 573 who were presented at the parliament voted for Prachanda to elect the Nepal’s 39th Prime Minister. 210 lawmakers voted against him. Speaker Onsari Gharti Magar declared Prachanda as a new Prime Minister of Nepal as he got majority votes of the parliament.

61 years old Dahal became Prime Minister with the backing of Nepali Congress, Federal alliance including some 15 fringe parties. Earlier, NC President Sher Bahadur Deuba proposed Dahal as new PM of Nepal. Clinching three point agreement among NC, CPN-Maoist Center and Madhesi front including Federal alliance, Dahal created conducive environment to become new PM. Prachanda is the only Communist leader who became Prime Minister for second time after 7 years in Nepal.

CPN-UML, the second largest party of Nepal and fourth largest party RPP Nepal including other fringe parties voted against Prachanda who was the only candidate for the PM post today. Earlier in parliament, presenting his candidacy, Prachanda who is also a former rebel leader, vowed to implement all the treaties done with China and India during former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli’s tenure.
