By Rup Narayan Dhakal : Pokhara—Gandaki Province Chief Minister Prithvi Subba Gurung failed to garner the crucial trust vote in the provincial assembly on Thursday. Gurung only secured 27 votes and 30 votes were cast against him. One lawmaker, Rajiv Gurung aka Deepak Manage remained absent and 1 RJM lawmaker Krishna Thapa didn’t participate in the voting process. The Gandaki Province assembly has 60 members including a speaker. Gurung should have secured 31 votes to retain the post.
He was reappointed as CM as a parliamentary leader of the single largest party- CPN-UML in line with 168-3 of Nepal’s Constitution. Following his reappointment on May 12, 2021, he should go for a floor test within a month as per Article 168-4 and he had decided to take a vote of confidence today. The Gandaki Province assembly has 60 members- ruling CPN-UML 27, Nepali Congress 15, CPN-MC 12 including a speaker, RJM 3, JSP 2, and independent 1.
Now, It has been expected that NC parliamentary leader Krishna Chandra Pokharel will stake a claim for a new PM from rival faction- NC, CPN-MC, RJM and JSP when Gandaki Province Governor Sita Paudel calls to form a new government as per 168-5.
Earlier today, CM Gurung presenting a vote of confidence motion in the assembly hall, asked all-party lawmakers to vote for him, leaving the power politics.
