Pokhara—Gandaki Province Chief Minister Prithvi Subba Gurung has resigned from his post on Sunday, a day before his floor test. A no-trust motion was registered against him in the province parliamentary secretariat. On April 28, the motion was also tabled in the provincial assembly which was begun as a special session on April 26.
Gandaki Province Government Sita Paudel also called political parties to forge a new government as per article 168- 2 that allows making government with two or more parties. After the completion of discussion over the motion in the house on April 28, it was being a time to vote against the no-trust motion but surprisingly speaker Netra Nath Adhikari differed the house session indefinitely, citing that he received a message from Rashtriya Janamorcha and a lawmaker Khim Biram Shahi from this party went disappeared. But the reality was that the lawmaker Shahi was tested positive for Covid- 19 twice and having treatment in a hospital ICU in Pokhara.
Following the postponement of the house session, ruling CPN-UML has criticized the speaker move, saying it undemocratic and unilateral. The Gandaki Province assembly has 60 members. Out of them, CPN-UML has 28 including independent lawmaker Rajiv Gurung, NC has 15, CPN-MC has 12 including speaker Adhikari, Rashtriya Janamorcha has 3 and Janata Samajbadi has 2. To make a new government, parties should come up with 31 lawmakers. RJM who has three lawmakers is said to be decisive to make a new government. Opposition parties have said that they are going to forge a new government and Krishna Chandra Pokhrel will lead that government. The special house session has been ended today.
