Bhume School awarded for its novel idea in waste management

Pokhara—Bhume Basic School (BBS) at Sudame of Annapurna Rural Municipality- Kaski has been awarded $500 by the Buddhist Environmental Solidarity (BES) for school’s outstanding initiation in collecting dumped plastic waste, informed school management committee chairman Dirgha Prasad sherchan.   

Korean Professional Artist Association (KPAA) chairman Kim Min Do and senior lecturer Lee Jeong Ok handed over cash and appreciation letter to Sherchan amid a formal program organized in school premises recently. The letter has been signed by BES’s executive Representative Bup Man.

Addressing the school family, Kim expressed his happiness that he got the opportunity to award the school for its model work. According to him, the sanitation drive was selected internationally as the school and its student played an big role in cleaning up the Himalaya region and their community.

Committee chairman Shrechan said that the appreciation they got would be helpful in running the school smoothly. He also added that he is happy as the school got the chance to be recognized internationally. Professor Tej Prasad Sharma said that the clean up drive that students carried out left positive impression in the society. He also informed that the money that school received would be utilized to make a garden and dais inside the school compound.  

At the same time, Korean art teacher Ku Hyang Kim had carried out a MoU between KPAA and the students of Annapurna Drawing Dream Team to exhibit in Seoul. The BBS is situated along the world-famous trekking trail of Annapurna Region and the school students have come up with a novel idea in the field of sanitation, collecting the waste in mineral water bottles.

They had received such training from conservation educationist Shyam Gurung last year. There are 75 students with the school formed in 2024 BS. Professor Tej Prasad Sharma and school teacher Chitra Kumari Ale also put their remarks during a formal program chaired by Sherchan.
