Three workers killed in Melamchi pipe laying task

Kathmandu—Three workers were killed in a mound collapse when they were laying pipe for Melmchi Water Supply Project in Sitapaila of Kathmandu this morning.

The incident happened as they were busy in excavating mud to lay pipe line at around 1.45 am this morning. According to a local police station, deceased are identified as Santos Das, 17 and Shyam Sundar Ram of Saptari. Prasad KC, 47 from Parvat is also among the dead.

Deas bodies have been sent to Teaching Hospital Maharajgunj. Pradhumna Chitrakar who is responsible for pipe laying job has been taken in custody by police for further investigation over the incident.

The Melamchi Water Supply Project (MWSP) is considered to be the most viable long-term alternative to ease the chronic water shortage situation within the Kathmandu Valley. The Project is designed to divert about 170 MLD of fresh water to Kathmandu Valley from the Melamchi River in Sindhupalchowk district.
