Pokhara: At least four persons were killed in police firing as demonstrators of Unified Democratic Madhesi Front (UDMF) and former clashed in Saptari District of Nepal today.
The incident happened as protest rally carried out by Madhesi Front’s activists tried to disrupt the mass meeting and rally organized under Mechi-Mahakali Campaign of main opposition CPN-UML in Rajbiraj. Demonstrators were trying to thwart the mass meeting that was being organized in Industrial Zone of Saptari.
Police have claimed that the petrol bomb and pelted stones by the cadres of Madheshi Front compelled former to open the firing. As per the press release of UDMF, deceased were identified as Sanjan Mehata of Maleth- 4 Saptari. He was shot dead nearby UML mass meeting. Similarly, injured Digambar Yadav took final breath on the way to Dharan base BP Koirala Health Science Foundation. Pitambar Mandal and Anad Shah were declared dead in same hospital, the release states.
The standing committee meeting of CPN-UML has decided to postpone the campaign for three days citing that the party has got a signed of conspiracy against its campaign that had inaugurated in Birtamod of Jhapa on Saturday. More than a dozen of demonstrators were injured during the incident. UDMF has claimed that the UML cadres mixed up with police were responsible behind the dead of Madhesi cadres.
CPN-UML top leaders are said to be resorting in Armed Police Force’s Barmajhiya Camp. UDMF has announced Tarai Bandh for Tuesday and Wednesday following the incident. According to information, a meeting of UDMF has decided to withdraw from the government.
Update (March 8): Digambar Yadav who was said to be killed during police firing is known of being alive later. His treatment is undergoing in hospital. UDMF had listed him as one of the deceased. However, on Wednesday, another person Birendra Kumar Mahato who sustained injury during police firing has been declared dead in Dharan base hospital on March 8.
