As per the moon position, two Ekadashi occur in a month. The progression of the moon from full moon to new moon is divided into fifteen equal arcs. Each arc measures one lunar day, called tithi: There are 24 Ekadashi’s in a calendar year. Occasionally there are two extra Ekadashis that happen in a lunar leap year. Each Ekadashi day has particular benefits and blessings that one can attain by the performance of specific activities. Two lunar phase which occur in a Hindu calendar month – the Shukla Paksha (period of the brightening moon also known as waxing phase) and the Krishna Paksha (period of the fading moon also known as waning phase).

Likewise, Tulsi (Ocimum tenuiflorum) is also worshiped in this day. Tulsi is a sacred plant for Hindus and is worshipped as the avatar of Lakshmi who is the wife of Vishnu.

Devotees worship Tulshi and lord Vishnu in that day especially in the river banks and in their homes. A long rope with attachment of flowers and other domestic items is hanged across the river in Ekadashi. Traditional festivals also are being organized in the bank of holy rivers in Nepal.
